Opinion: By R. Al Bain
While watching Bill O’Reilly’s Factor TV show Thursday, March, 23, 2011 it was anything but no spin! I think those in charge at FOX NEWS may be considering letting the wrong guy go in Glenn Beck! In regard to the U.S. involvement in Libya he comes off as a school yard bully to any guest that doesn’t share his opinion. He was absolutely rude and obnoxious to his guest Laura Ingraham on the subject while she was trying to explain her view consistently interrupting her and not letting her give her point of view on the issue.

The Bill O’Reilly view is that we are a “Noble Nation” that must be involved because otherwise Colonel Muammar Gaddafi would kill his own people. While he slams his guest views as speculation what would you call his? Even if this was true the American people feel otherwise as far as intervention. They have been killing each other and fighting wars in the middle east for over 3000 years and will continue to do so and nothing we can do will stop it! He stated he agrees with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that we should be involved, maybe he needs to switch political parties?

The United States is Broke, in Debt, our Roads, Bridges, and our Infrastructure are in disarray and our children and grandchildren will suffer immensely for the shape our elected representatives have put our country in with their legislative actions! Wouldn’t it be more “Noble” to take care of our children, grandchildren and country than someone else’s? On his own website there is a poll: What should the U.S. be doing in Libya? Americans overwhelmingly say absolutely do nothing 43% against compared to 29% supporting according to a poll conducted on his website http://www.billoreilly.com/poll-center.

“The decision to obligate the United States in a third conflict should not be taken lightly. Authorization for military intervention does not come from the United Nations. It comes from the American people, through their representatives. The American people have no representation at the United Nations. Their representatives sit in the U.S. Congress.” U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz

Pure Robbery: Michigan Legislators dipping into their favorite Piggy Bank
Here we go again! The Michigan Legislature now decisively under GOP control voted overwhelmingly to increase the cost of a government tourism industry subsidy by 65 percent above what had already been allocated for the year. They did so by robbing their favorite piggy bank the “21st Century Jobs Fund” a program that in and of itself should and must be eliminated. Although the funds creators were very creative in naming this fund it is and has been a complete and total failure! Click here to see how your representatives voted.

More Cost to Michigan Taxpayers in Film Office Lawsuit?
A New York-based TV and documentary film producer sued the Michigan Film Office in U.S. District Court in Detroit on Wednesday, claiming that he was improperly denied one of the state’s generous financial incentives while other, less worthy, productions were approved.

Bad Government and the Uninvolved Citizen
The talk about Chicago and its famed municipal corruption. New York’s is the stuff of Hollywood movies. But right here in Michigan it’s just as bad! Consider the financial and political scandals recently here in Michigan such as in Romulus, Police Chief, Southfield, a city council member, Allen Park, movie studio fiasco, Southgate, Police Officer, Ecorse, the mayor and city controller, River Rouge, the former city council president, St. Clair Shores, the former mayor, Oakland County, two former leaders of the county Democratic Party, and in Detroit, well, we all know about corruption in Motown. Our society is rotten. And who can be blamed? You, the uninvolved citizen. You’ve gotten the governance you deserve. Ask yourself, when is the last time you attended a city council hearing, a school board assembly or went to a voting booth? Don’t scream about your union rights when you don’t bother to go to your own union meetings.

Planned Parenthood Republicans
Trends within politics rarely occur in a vacuum. Instead, they develop within a broader ideological and historical context, which accounts for individual elected officials’ political motivations to this very day. Planned Parenthood, for instance, has always enjoyed the support of a notable component of the Republican Party, especially its moderate or left leaning wing, comprised of influential Establishment elitists, internationalists, and environmentalists. Here in Monroe County Michigan we have such an elected official in the 1st vice chair of the Monroe County Republican Party Glenda Kennon mother of State Senator Randy Richardville according to an email she sent out in 2008 advocating what good things Planned Parenthood does!

Highest U.S. Underemployment Rates: Illinois, California and Michigan
According to a Gallup poll published Friday, the national underemployment average was 19% in 2010. Illinois, California and Michigan had the highest percentages of underemployed workers in the country last year, leading a group of nine states that had an underemployment rate of between 21% and 25%. The other states included Hawaii, North Carolina, Oregon, Florida, Mississippi and Nevada.

Will the Government nationalize your 401k retirement account?
Sounding the Alarm on Plan to Seize 401(k)s! In February, the White House released its “Annual Report on the Middle Class” containing new regulations favored by Big Labor including a bailout of critically underfunded union pension plans through “retirement security” options. The radical solution most favored by Big Labor is the seizure of private 401(k) plans for government disbursement which lets them off the hook for their collapsing retirement scheme. And, of course, the Obama administration is eager to accommodate their buddies.

Opinion: By R. Al Bain
College leaders; U-M President Mary Sue Coleman, Oakland University President Gary Russi, and Ferris State University President David Eislerwere were in Lansing speaking before a state House subcommittee hearing on public university budgets say “no more cuts” stated their case.

The “overpaid” president of the University of Michigan Mary Sue Coleman was in Lansing crying foul with the proposed $47-million cuts it is expected to receive in state aid next year. She was speaking outside a state House subcommittee hearing on public university budgets, declined to say whether the university will raise tuition to make up for the cuts. She said that decision is under consideration (is this statement a threat)?

Coleman said, “We’ve shown great discipline in our fiscal management. In all our cost-containment measures we protect our core mission: academics and research.” Missing from her statements was the exorbitant contract extension with raise she received to the tune of $800,000.00 plus another $100,000.00 when she leaves! Also Bloomberg Businessweek did an interesting article on the Highest-Paid Presidents of Public Universities where Mary Sue Coleman was the fifth highest paid president in the nation which list her package before her latest contract extension! Taxpayers should be outraged!

While the public doesn’t like Snyder’s plan to cut K-12 school district funding, it agrees with his proposal to cut funding to the state’s public universities by 15% — 51% say they support it. Why not cut the sports budget? We all love sports but shouldn’t education be the top priority? Why doesn’t she cut the coaching staff’s salary in half, cut the money the school spends on sports or dig into the $6 billion endowment fund to come up with the cash needed to fund education?

Firefighters or Mitch Albom’s Movie Subsidy?
The Mackinac Center has long been critical of these types of programs, based on two exhaustive studies. (The most recent study was completed in 2009.) The Center’s conclusions were reinforced by a state audit conducted in 2010, a recent Senate Fiscal Agency analysis, and a study from the Upjohn Institute. Because of the government-offered handouts, it appears that a core government service that protects citizens firefighting may be sacrificed due to the pipe dream of luring Hollywood to Allen Park and other locals around the state.

Pure Spending — GOP Finds More for Tourism Subsidies
Republicans scored significant electoral gains last November by promising to rein in runaway spending and put state government’s fiscal house in order. Yet in an early spending vote, the Michigan Legislature — now decisively under GOP control — voted overwhelmingly to increase the cost of a government tourism industry subsidy by 65 percent above what had already been allocated for the year. New GOP Gov. Rick Snyder asked for the increased spending, and the bill awaits his signature. “The people elected us to save money, not spend more,” noted state Rep. Dave Agema of Grandville, one of the House Republicans to vote against the bill. What happened to the day’s of picking winners and losers in the business community was over? The benefits to this private industry by the taxpayers is unconscionable!

Should Michigan Taxpayers Spend More on Tourism Industry Subsidies?
Introduced in the House on January 27, 2011, to authorize spending a total of $20 million from the “21st Century Jobs Fund” business subsidy program to pay for promotional subsidies for the tourism industry (“Pure Michigan” ads) this year, in addition to $5.4 million from another source. In effect, the bill adds another $10 million to what’s already been committed to this private industry that doesn’t see fit to fund it themselves! In 2011 it’s more of the same old “Failed Subsidies” in the Michigan Legislature
Senate Bill 144, Expand 21st Century Jobs Fund corporate subsidies, passed 36 to 0 in the Senate To authorize “21st Century Jobs Fund” business subsidies in the form of cash grants and loans for certain information technology and agricultural processing firms selected by state “economic development” officials. Here we go again! This program must and should be eliminated as to cut the size and scope of Michigan government! It’s just a favorite piggy-bank of our elected officials in Lansing and a burden to the taxpayers. Why can’t we have our state government focused upon providing essential services?  Is taxing our population in order to give preferential aid to certain industries with funds dispersed by a small group of state “economic development” officials really going to make us more competitive in a global economy? I think NOT! If we keep electing the same ones over and over expecting a different result we deserve what we get!

A Morally Bankrupt Budget Proposal here in Michigan
Gov. Rick Snyder has announced his proposals for dealing with the state’s budget crisis and, predictably, there is plenty of pain to spread around. The big question, though, is whether that pain is spread fairly. I don’t think so. The word pain means a “TAX HIKE” on those that are still fortunately working! Cuts in education, eliminating the earned income tax credit, and oh yes, more cuts in revenue sharing payments to local governments where reports are coming in that local municipalities are seeking tax increases so they could continue to afford such luxuries as police and fire protection. Don’t you just love it when our politicians get creative with new words to describe a tax increase such as pain, fee, surcharge, and millage just to name a few?

Michigan DHS Finishes Off Forced Unionization Experiment
After repeated efforts to kill it in the Legislature and in court, the “stealth unionization” movement in Michigan was knocked down decisively on Tuesday when the Michigan Department of Human Services put an end to the Michigan Home Based Child Care Council. DHS Director Maura Corrigan, recently appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder, said the department will no longer fund the MHBCCC or collect union dues from child care providers

Why not let Moroun expand his bridge?
I can’t figure out why we just don’t let Matty Moroun expand his bridge. I don’t understand why our new governor, who I think is the best example of entrepreneurism around, wants to substitute public money for private investment – even if the public dollars are coming from Canada and he’s leveraging them to get more federal road dollars into Michigan. It’s all public money.

The Political Economy of Government Employee Unions
The main reason so many state and local governments are bankrupt, or on the verge of bankruptcy, is the combination of government-run monopolies and government-employee unions. Government-employee unions have vastly more power than do private-sector unions because the entities they work for are typically monopolies.

Home Values Headed for a Double Dip
Recently, a number of economists and prognosticators projected a  housing market double-dip, essentially cautioning Americans that the apparent recovery in home prices during 2010 was temporary, and that prices are again on the decline and approaching their 2009 trough. These predictions seem more likely than ever to come true, in light of the housing data reports that came out last week.

Opinion: By R. Al Bain
With the country focused on Wisconsin and it’s Governor in regard to the Public Employees Union issue and collective bargaining, an understanding of the situation needs to be brought to the forefront. What many Citizens and Private Union Workers fail to understand is that Public and Private Unions are two different animals. Public Unions salaries and benefits are provided by we the taxpayers, Private Unions are not! The only correlation I see is that indirectly we the taxpayers may pay for higher goods and services. An example being automobiles in that when the union negotiates a contract with the automaker for higher wages and benefits the cost is passed on to the consumer in the cost of the vehicle.

Private union workers who choose to stand by their fellow union brethren do not understand that the salaries and benefits of these public union employees are not even on par with theirs and cost them dearly! Another example would be that if the public employee’s through their union get a raise in salaries and benefits through collective bargaining and or arbitration awards, and they don’t get a raise through their private union, then they in effect get the equivalent of a pay cut. How do I figure that? With the Country, State, and Local Municipalities broke, they will have to raise taxes as to meet these obligations. I always thought that working for the government was as a public servant? Yes, they should be paid but on par with the private sector not above!

Time to Repeal Public Act 312 not Amend it!
Legislation introduced by a young Michigan Senator back in 1969 that became law was by the name of Coleman Young a Democrat and a friend to Union Institutional interest! By introducing SB 1072 in 2010 that would further favor this law in regard to binding arbitration goes against Republican Principles, Traditions, and Values that the Republican Party was founded upon! That Michigan Senator that introduced this Bill was Randy Richardville of Monroe. This would further place the burden on the local municipalities and the taxpayers of Michigan in favor of Union Institutional interest.

Public-Employee Unions are Bankrupting America
Nationwide, state and local government unions have a 45 percent total-compensation advantage over their private-sector counterpart. With high-pay compensation and virtually no benefits co-pay, the politically arrogant unions are bankrupting America — which by some estimates is suffering from $3 trillion in unfunded liabilities.

Local Government Union Pay Reform Good in House; Questionable in GOP Senate
Public Act 312, the law that requires binding arbitration for police and firefighter unions when they cannot agree to a contract with their municipalities, has been considered a problem for years by municipal officials and many in the GOP. Today, with Republicans in firm control of the entire Legislature and the governor’s office, there is a serious effort brewing in the Michigan House to eliminate PA 312 altogether. But the major obstacle may come from within the Republican Party’s own ranks. Last week, speaking to the MIRS newsletter (www.MIRSnews.com), GOP Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville said a repeal of PA 312 was not on his agenda.

A Good Explanation on Public Unions and Collective Bargaining
This governor explains public unions and collective bargaining and the impact it has on taxpayers who pay their salaries and benefits. Troubled Banks Rise to Highest Level in 18 years
The number of banks at risk of failing made up nearly 12 percent of all federally insured banks in the final three months of 2010, the highest level in 18 years. In a recent front page article in the Monroe Evening News it was suggested by the writer and a Monroe Bank and Trust official that it’s not as bad as it seems! The same paper reprinted this AP article buried on page 8 several day’s later, hmm? Least we forget that Monroe Bank and Trust has been labeled problematic by bankrate.com! It’s a concern that the Bank official would say things aren’t so bad!

In Michigan Most oppose CCW change to allow College Kids to carry on Campus
In a recent poll of Michigan voters done by EPIC-MRA (scroll to bottom) shows that 68% Oppose this legislation and although I am all for second amendment rights, I do not believe that students have the maturity level even if licensed and trained to carry a weapon on campus that this legislation would provide. With all the experimenting with drugs, alcohol, and partying that has been well documented over the years with college age children and yes, children, many are still immature at 21 years of age as to handle this privilege that this legislation would provide them, this is a recipe for disaster! Introduced by Rep. Richard LeBlanc (D), 2011 House Bill 4009 to repeal the “gun-free zone” provision of the concealed pistol permit law is the same as the one Introduced by Sen. Randy Richardville (R) Senate Bill 747 on August 19, 2009. This is nothing more than pandering to the special interest groups who donate and help elect these career politicians through their membership. Even Marshall Wyatt Earp of the old wild west used to have cowhands check their guns in when coming into town for a night of partying at the local saloons!

Is Your Bank One of the 459 in Immediate Danger of Failure?
Banks teetered on the brink of collapse not long ago. We all remember the dark days after Lehman Brothers collapsed and it seemed like the lights on Wall Street would forever dim. With more than a year between now and that dark interlude, the conventional wisdom is that the system has been righted. This is, unfortunately, incorrect. The latest data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), which insures U.S. bank deposits and keeps a very close eye on everything banks do, said its number of “problem banks” rose fourth quarter, to 884 from 860.

Illegal Alien Law in Michigan
Introduced by Rep. David Agema (R) on February 22, 2011, to require state agencies and local governments to verify the legal U.S. residence status of every person who applies for various kinds of welfare benefits, with some exceptions; applicants would have to submit an affidavit affirming that they are not an illegal alien. This Bill is getting heat from The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee Michigan Network. Why should this be a problem if they are legal? It shouldn’t be! This Bill is all about protecting all legal American citizens period.

Opinion: By R. Al Bain
In Governor Rick Snyder’s budget proposal the “Cut’s To Local Revenue Sharing” is in fact a tax hike waiting to happen! When there are plenty of other government programs and entities that could and should be cut rather than local revenue sharing as to cut the size and scope of government without putting the burden on the backs of the taxpayers at the local level.

Pure Michigan Advertising Campaign, MEDA, and the 21st Century Jobs Fund are just a few of the many that come to mind here. Tax revenue-sharing payments from the state to local governments along with local property taxes are a key part of a typical county budget. Police and Fire cannot be supported on the backs of the property tax alone. With home values plummeting and less property tax revenue coming in, local municipalities will be forced to raise taxes in order to meet the obligations that past and present politicians have made possible through their legislative actions.

Another Point of View: Proposed Budget Cut’s? By John Q. Taxpayer
The President ordered his cabinet to cut $100 million from the $3.5 trillion federal budget.
I’m so impressed by this sacrifice that I have decided to do the same thing with my personal budget.  I spend about $2000 a month on groceries, household expenses, medicine, utilities, etc, but it’s time to get out the budget cutting axe, go through my expenses, and cut back.

I’m going to cut my spending at exactly the same ratio, 1/35,000 of my total budget.  After doing the math, it looks like instead of spending $2000 a month; I’m going to have to cut that number by six cents.  Yes, I’m going to have to get by with $1999.94, but that’s what sacrifice is all about.  I’ll just have to do without some things, that are, frankly, luxuries.
(Did the president actually think no one would do the math?)

What the Richardville Amendment to Public Act 312 really means
First a little history on (Public Act 312) of 1969. This legislation that became law was introduced by a young Michigan Senator and the former Mayor of Detroit by the name of Coleman Young  (Democrat) – Detroit as payment made for services rendered to the Police and Fire Unions for campaign contributions and support as to get elected. The bottom line to State Senator Randy Richardville’s proposed amendment to Public Act 312 in 2010 with SB 1072 was to speed up the arbitration process for Public Union workers with the use of third party arbitrators who give Public Unions big contracts with lavish benefits at taxpayer expense. This is all about legislation introduced by Senator Richardville as payment made for campaign donations received by Union supporters and not what’s in the best interest of the taxpayers of Michigan who pay their salaries and benefits. Rather than to amend this law that benefits Public Unions at taxpayer expense it should be repealed. Private Unions and Public Unions are two different animals. Public-sector unions bleed taxpayers! For the first time in history, a majority of union members are government employees. The National Labor Relations Act (a.k.a Wagner Act) does not apply to government employers: The term “employer” shall not include the United States or any wholly owned Government corporation, or any Federal Reserve Bank, or any State or political subdivision thereof.

Deficit Panel Targets Mortgage Interest Deduction
This would be a “tragedy” if the mortgage interest deduction were eliminated or reduced for the majority of home owners. Among the proposals put forward by the Democratic and Republican co-chairs of President Obama’s deficit commission is one idea that could hit homeowners where it hurts: reducing or eliminating the popular mortgage interest tax deduction. Does anybody but me remember when new car loans and credit card interest was deductible? We the taxpayers just keep getting hammered!

Outrageous Taxes: Some New, Some Old, Some Hidden
If you needed any more proof that our state, local and federal budget spending is out of control, here it is. Politicians are getting crafty with a plethora of hidden taxes including but not limited to a museum tax as well.

Budget Cuts: Get Our Elected Officials Off the Bottle
When talking Trillions what’s a few Million? If this is going on in Washington I’m willing to bet it’s going on in Lansing as well! A not for profit, Corporate Accountability International, recently released a report with a startling revelation that members of Congress over the course of a year spent nearly one million dollars on bottled water. That works out to about $2000 per member of congress, just on bottled water. It’s our tax dollars.
